The development of new types of heated tobacco has accelerated, and Japanese cigarettes have collapsed in an unprecedented fashion.
According to Japan Tobacco International's third-quarter 2021 results, domestic cigarette sales in Japan fell 8.2 percent year on year and 8.9 percent quarter on quarter.
Traditional cigarette shipments fell by more than 7 percent in 2018, following an 11.5 percent drop in the first quarter of 2017. Meanwhile, shipments of heated heated tobacco increased from 1.2 billion to 6.4 billion.
Overall, the number of cigarettes sold in Japan has fallen by 42 percent since 2016, when heated tobacco products became popular in the Japanese market. Cigarette sales plummeted in an unprecedented way. This rate of decline in cigarette smoking has never been seen before in the history of the world.
Furthermore, there is emerging evidence that the harm reduction potential of these novel tobacco products may be beginning to translate into real-world effects. A review of recent population medical data in Japan reveals a significant decrease in hospitalizations for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and ischemic heart disease beginning in 2017, which is closely related to the proliferation of heated tobacco products.
